New Features Set New Standards

As well as realigning the engine line-up, Hyundai has further increased the level of specification across the Sonata range. Crucially, it has introduced a fully integrated audio system, to replace the previous after-market unit that featured on the now deleted 2.4 litre petrol model.

Furthermore, the new audio unit, which features an MP3 compatible CD-player as standard (6-disc CD changer on V6 model), comes complete with steering wheel-mounted controls for even greater convenience.

Being a car designed to carry its occupants over long distances in true comfort, Hyundai has fitted Smartnav^TM satellite navigation as standard to all Sonata models, to make getting around unfamiliar places easier than ever. The Smartnav^TM system operates via a 24-hour UK-based call centre. One press of a button contacts the call centre, where operatives are on hand 24 hours a day 365 days a year to download the caller’s desired directions directly to the in-car navigation system.

As well as addresses and postcode locations, callers can ask to be directed to almost anywhere, from the nearest petrol station to the closest chemist – a significant aid when driving in unfamiliar locations. With soothing sounds on the integrated audio system and no reason left to argue over the directions, Hyundai has gone one step further to try to ensure the in-car atmosphere remains as serene as possible, by introducing climate control as standard across the range.

Higher Specification for New Line-up

The Sonata was highly specified when originally launched in May 2005, but the realignment sees the introduction of even higher standard equipment levels, including:

17-inch alloy wheels on all models
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) on all models
Leather upholstery on all models
Combined radio/MP3-compatible CD player on all models
Auto Cruise Control on diesel and V6 models

For the first time, black cabin trim is now also available on 2.0-litre models ordered with Thunder Grey and Crystal Silver exterior paintwork.

3.3 V6

The new flagship 3.3 V6 is luxuriously appointed, and over and above the trim of the 2.0 litre models, features: a six-disc autochanger, Air Quality Control System, reversing sensors, electro-chromatic mirror, power sunroof, power-adjustable heated front seats and a windscreen-wiper de-icer system. An entirely new colour combination has also been added to the line-up for the 3.3 V6, which is available in Prestige Dark Red Mica paintwork with a beige leather and wood trim interior.

All three new engines boast highly competitive performance qualities. The 2.0 litre petrol and diesel models are available with a choice of manual transmission, five-speed petrol and six-speed for the diesel, or four-speed H-matic automatic transmission for £1,000.

The 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC 2.0 litre petrol model has power (143 bhp) and economy (42.8 mpg Extra Urban Cycle) to compete with the equivalent engine model from Ford’s D-segment volume leader, the Mondeo.

The new 4-cylinder 16-valve SOHC 2.0 litre CRTD diesel Sonata, meanwhile, boasts a wallet-saving 56.6 mpg on the Extra Urban Cycle, but equally, can cover the 0-62 dash in a sporty 10.7 seconds.

For real performance, however, there is the 24 valve 3.3 litre V6 petrol Sonata, capable of 143 mph top speed and 0-62 mph in just 7.8 seconds.

Driving dynamics are aided by the use of a new five-speed H-matic automatic transmission. And with 232 bhp on tap, the V6 also has bigger brake discs to cope with its greater performance.

Fleet Friendly Line-Up

As well as increasing Sonata’s appeal to retail customers, the new engine line-up should also make the Sonata more attractive to company car drivers and fleet managers. With 67 per cent of cars in the Sonata’s segment being sold to fleets and with fleets taking 71 per cent diesel, Hyundai expects to make greater inroads into the fleet market with the arrival of its new diesel Sonata. Already fully equipped for the most demanding business user, the 2.0 CRTD CDX Sonata will cost from as little as *£72.58 a month, or *£18.15 in tax for a business user (*22 per cent tax payer driving a 2.0 CRTD CDX manual).

Sonata service schedules remain the same as the rest of the range at 10,000 miles or 12 months, which ever comes soonest.
